World Championship of Online Poker

(WCOOP)

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is an online poker tournament series sponsored by PokerStars. It is played on the PokerStars site in September.

Established in 2002, WCOOP is PokerStars attempt to establishing the online equivalent of the World Series of Poker. The WCOOP tournament series is the largest of its kind on the Internet.

The fifteen WCOOP events in 2005 generated $12,783,900 in prize money, making it not only the biggest ever online poker event, but the third biggest poker series (live or online) in all of 2005.

Keeping with the tradition of the World Series of Poker, the WCOOP is a series of tournaments in which players compete in a variety of different poker games. The games featured are Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit Texas Hold’em, Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, Pot Limit Omaha High and Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, and HORSE. In 2007, 5 Card Draw and 2-7 Triple draw were added. 2-7 Single Draw and mixed limit games were added in 2008, and Badugi was added in 2009. The main event is No Limit Hold’em.

In addition to the cash prize, the winner of each WCOOP event receives a personally engraved 14 karat gold bracelet from PokerStars.

2010 WCOOP is played on the PokerStars site in September.

On March 15, 2010, Harrah’s and the World Series of Poker announced that

the WSOP Tournament of Champions returned on June 27, 2010 when 27

players competed in a freeroll for $1 million in prize money. The new format

is an All-Star Event format, where the public decided which players

participated in the event froma list of 521 current,

living WSOP bracelet-holders.

The public decided the 20 players via an online vote. Voting was open from

March 15, 2010 until midnight ET on June 15, 2010. There results of votes

were as follows: Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth,

Chris Ferguson, Allen Cunningham, Johnny Chan, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein,

John Juanda,Erik Seidel, Jennifer Harman, Huck Seed, Dan Harrington,

T.J. Cloutier, Sammy Farha, Howard Lederer, Greg Raymer,

Joe Hachem and Antonio Esfandiari.

Five of the seats were automatically awarded. The reigning WSOP Champion

Joe Cada, the reigning WSOP Europe Champion Barry Shulman and the three

previous TOC winners: Annie Duke, Mike Matusow and Mike Sexton.

The remaining two seats were awarded as sponsors exemptions by Harrah’s

they included Andrew Barton and Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier.

On June 27, the 27 players began play in the Amazon Room at the Rio

All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the final nine players returned

to play the final table on July 4, 2010 in the same location.

First place will pay $500ꯠ, with 2nd receiving $250,000, 3rd earning

$100,000, and 4th through 9th each taking home $25,000.

ESPN taped the event for a special 2-hour episode that aired on

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2ዊ.

The event was open to spectators to attend, as long as

they are 21 years of age or older.The 2010 World Series of Poker

Tournament of Champions featured No Limit Hold’em as the game.

The World Poker Tour ( part 2 )

Now in its ninth season of broadcast, it still remains among the

highest-rated television programs on cable. It airs Mondays on the Game Show Network. The first three seasons of WPT are also available on NTSC DVD. (The second season DVD set features audio commentary by several of the players. The third season is only available in a “Best Of” format, featuring just half of the episodes.) CITY TV airs the WPT on Sundays at 4pm PST in Canada with a rebroadcast at midnight (or shortly after, depending on the length of their Sunday Night Movie).

The series moved to Monday nights since the move to GSN  in 2008. Beginning with the񎧘 season, host Mike Sexton no longer toasts the winner of the Tournament with an “official beer of the World Poker Tour” (sponsored in years past by Anheuser-Busch). They now provide champagne glasses for their salute. In accordance with the agreement, one player a week will won a tournament on ClubWPT.com and appear on a televised show. A series of spin-off tournaments, titled the Professional Poker Tour, began filming in 2004. Broadcast of the series was delayed, which was partly due to a dispute with the Travel Channel over rights.

In the fall of񎧕, WPTE announced that “a cable channel” (believed to be ESPN) had withdrawn from bidding for the PPT series, and that WPTE was negotiating with the Travel Channel to air the series. On January 30, 2006, WPTE and the Travel Channel announced that they had dismissed all open lawsuits. The series began regular broadcast July 5, 2006, but was suspended after one season as WPTE couldn’t find a television home for a second season. An interesting side note is that only 4 players have finshed in the money at least once in all 8 seasons of the World Poker Tour. These players are Phil Hellmuth, Erik Seidel, Mark Seif, and Surinder Sunar.

The World Poker Tour ( part 1 )

The World Poker Tour is a collection of Texas hold ‘em poker tournaments held internationally, but mainly in the United States. The television show and the broadcasts of the World Series of Poker have led to a boom in the table game across American homes, in local casino poker rooms and online. The key sponsors of the tour are casinos and online poker sites. The show, which is syndicated internationally, is co-hosted by World Series of Poker bracelet winner Mike Sexton, and actor Vince Van Patten. Shana Hiatt served as the show host and sideline reporter in its first three seasons. Courtney Friel took over the host role for the fourth season, and Sabina Gadecki for the fifth. Layla Kayleigh and Kimberly Lansing began serving as hostesses in season six. Poker player and reporter Amanda Leatherman was the hostess for season seven.

The tour had its debut season in the latter part of 2002 and early part of 2003, climaxing with the WPT Championship in April 20ǣ at the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first season aired on the Travel Channel on American cable television in the spring of 2003. The show made its network debut on February 1, 2004 on NBC with a special “Battle Of Champions” tournament, which aired against CBS coverage of the Super Bowl XXXVIII pre-game show. The Travel Channel aired the first five seasons of the Tour. In April 20ǧ, WPTE announced that the series would move to GSN for its sixth season in the spring of 2008 [2]. The first WPT tournament to air on GSN, the Mirage Poker Showdown, debuted on March 24, 2008. In July 2008, WPTE announced that the series would move to Fox Sports Net for its seventh season.

The drawing power of the WPT, and most other poker tournaments, is that anyone who can pay the “buy-in” (an amount ranging from $2,500 to $25,000) or win a “satellite” tournament is able to compete against the top professional players.
